Types of Learning The popular phrase “you learn something new every day” certainly applies to college students. After learning about the three major types of learning, surface learning, strategic learning, and deep learning, students must choose which type they would like to pursue. Instead of committing to one type of learning strategy, I want to be able to adapt myself to the situation and learn in the most efficient manner. In my opinion, surface learning is weak but sometimes a necessity due to time restrictions. If you are planning on pursuing a major and becoming successful in the workplace, surface learning will barely allow you to fulfill your dreams. That's why my goal is to minimize surface learning and work on diving deeper.
From the outside, strategic learning seems like a perfect way to succeed in class. Strategic learning is when a student understands what a professor requires them to know, and in response, memorizes the information. The primary result is high grades, which everyone desires. I believe that most of my high school learning was strategic. However, moving forward I hope to connect all of my learning on a deeper level because when I am applying for a job in the future, I want to be able to have mastered the information instead of only passing tests and then forgetting 99% of the material. I am able to learn this way by connecting new information and ideas on a personal level so they mean something to me. For example, I practice deep learning in Nutrition 207 by thinking about my own diet and habits when leaning about Dietary Guidelines and Nutrition Recomendations. Deep learning leads to understanding, which is crucial for personal growth and true understanding.
My hope is to have more than one method of learning. Part of learning is understanding the context of the situation and assessing which learning style is appropriate. They key to real success is reading the situation and deciding which learning strategy will lead you to success both in the present and in the future. My goal for my college career and beyond is to connect as much learning as possible on the deepest level.
